bears have been sited, but i've yet to see any.
i haven't seen any lions either.
what i have done, though, is listen to 'our love to admire' at least once a day.
they've hooked me yet again.

Emotionalism

i've been in love with the banjo for a few years now. can't play one to save my life, but that doesn't take anything away. and i'm listening to these avett boys play their banjos and geetars and double basses and it makes me happy to be listening to their bluegrass, even though they seem like sad guys more than half the time. not during singalongs, though, like in 'pretty girl from san diego.' that's more of a peppy one. they've got some fiddle and horns worked in here and there on this album too. i guess i'd say it's toned-down bluegrass. more strumming than picking, but they pick when they need to. it all comes together well.

i'm in the midst of deciding whether or not to use of these songs for the mix i'm making as a wedding favor. i'm leaning away from them because i'm less familiar with their tunes and i wouldn't want to chance it, come off as a phoney or something. it's a mighty fine record, though, i'll keep saying that.

so far my favorite selections include jens lekman, my morning jacket, glen hansard, sufjan stevens, and the national. i'm open to other suggestions. i mean i know like three people read this. so, you three, hit me. if you feel like it, obviously. and tb, get the avett bros off the box when you can, if you haven't yet. you'll like them.

i've been fiddling with a guitar a bit while here in illinois. almost nothing short of clumsy has come from it. i mean i've discovered a couple melodies i like, but that's about it. my fingers are finding the chords a bit easier too. but, really, other than that i'm nowhere close to a song. i'm leaving those to johnny. i'll add the thumps when i get back to dallas.

we watched the virgin suicides tonight. i'm glad i watched it, but it really did depress the hell out of me. well done, sofia.

Gimme Fiction

working at a record store, a mostly used record store at that, doesn't pay well, as you might imagine. but that doesn't mean it's without perks. aside from the nearly endless access to all the used music and movies we sell, i've had the privilege of becoming friends with a few regulars. and with these friendships come good conversation and advice about films to watch, bands to check out, places to see around town, shows to go to, and the like. oh, and getting into invite-only parties at the granada theater, which is now the primary venue in town to showcase a lot of the bands i'd want to see. like, more recently, the rapture, clap your hands say yeah, elvis perkins.
actually, i've been called about one of these secret parties, and that was last night. my friend cory, an enthusiastic, friendly as mr. rogers, (tall, dark, and handsome, maybe single? - ladies,) big time jam band fan, called me last night around 7 while i was at work. i was surprised to hear from him, because he's only called when there's a concert hookup, and as far as i knew there wasn't anything coming up i wanted to see. i just don't know everything that goes on, as he quickly explained that there was a private party that night sponsored by jack daniels, with free drinks and free food. he wanted to know if i could come. and then he added, "and spoon's playing."
are you serious, cory?
he was, indeed.
last night was a very good night.
they played a wide range, the bulk of which was from 'gimme fiction.' they played at least two new jams, both decent, the second i liked a little better than the first, which started off kinda boring. new songs are always fun to hear, though. while i love 'gimme fiction', i was more excited to hear some older favorites - "the fitted shirt" and " anything you want", both from 'girls can tell'. they even played "quincy punk episode", which they said afterward they hadn't played in forever. that song is particularly memorable for me because it's the first spoon song i heard, in jared bane's mercury, the song that got me hooked. they rocked it. hard.
it was my first spoon show, and one for the books. or at least this blog and my braggings tomorrow to my friends at work.

"I wanna change your ways.
Said I'm gonna get it right one of these days.
And I'm looking through you, riding the brakes.
Bringing about the apocalypse is not considered cool.
And you go setting it up, never give it a thought; just go setting it up.
My mathematical mind can see the breaks.
So I'm gonna stop riding the brakes..."
